The state government on Wednesday announced its decision to name the Integrated School Complex at Cujira as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Vidhya Sankul, Cujira in honour of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader.
The announcement was made by Economic Development Corporation (EDC) Chairman Siddharth Kuncalienkar.
Presently, around 8,000 students of Dr K B Hedgewar High School, Red Rosary High School, Mushtifund High School, Dempo higher secondary school and college file into the complex every day while Anjuman Nurul Islam HS is expected to move into the complex by June this year.
Each of these six schools from Panaji had been granted 10,000 sq mts of land within the complex on a
99-year lease.
Speaking to the media at Panaji, Kuncalienkar informed that with the aim of easing the flow of traffic within the complex, the state government has made a budgetary provision of Rs 10 crore for a comprehensive revamp plan at the Cujira complex.
“Phase I of the masterplan, which focuses on traffic management and parking for 864 two-wheelers and 256 four-wheelers and 64 buses, will be completed by the start of the new academic year,”
he said.
Kuncalienkar, who chairs the task force committee of Cujira, further disclosed that Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) appointed Rahul Deshpande and Associates to draw up the master plan after studying the movement of traffic, emergency exits, rainwater flow and all other relevant aspects of the complex.
“Accordingly, the final design concept focuses on encouraging pedestrianisation, enhancing the green cover and providing adequate parking,” he stated adding that unless a child is sick or is disabled, the parents will not be permitted to drive their vehicle into the complex.
Architect Rahul Deshpande made a detailed presentation of his masterplan which was prepared upon surveying the traffic movement, land contouring and existing services including rainwater at the complex.
“The highlights of the Phase I design include encouraging pedestrianisation and discouraging use of vehicles within the complex, making the complex green by planting 175 trees suited to Goan climate, provision of distinct and separate paths for students and vehicles and most importantly, a separate drop-off zones for each type of vehicle to avoid congestion in front of schools,” he said.
The architectural design also includes beautification of the spring flowing through the complex and creation of an art space on the SAG stadium wall facing the schools.
The work on phase I of the plan is expected to start by mid-April subject to government approval.
Tender for the work is likely to be floated within 15 days following the completion of the estimation of the project.
Thereafter, Phase II will be initiated, which will comprise a multi-utilities sports complex, an administrative building with coaching center for UPSC entrance examination training, banks and Directorate of Education office.
Kuncalienkar further informed that around 7,700 sq mts of land was recently acquired from BSNL at the cost of Rs 3.5 crore to create additional parking lot and a road.
